Everything you need to know about conquering the 20x20 grid, battling for territory, and earning rewards.

1. Overview

4Squares is a territory conquest game built on Solana. The game features a 20x20 grid of 400 squares that players can buy, customize, and battle over.

Each square can display an image of your choice, making it perfect for advertising, art showcases, or simply claiming your territory. The game uses $SQ tokens for all in-game transactions.

2. Buying Squares

There are two ways to acquire a square:

Genesis Purchase

Unclaimed squares can be purchased at the genesis price of 0.1 SOL. The first owner of a square becomes the Genesis Owner, which grants special benefits like royalties from future battles on that square.

Resale Purchase

Owned squares can be bought from their current owner. The price uses a bonding curve - each time a square is sold, its price increases by a multiplier.

Base resale price starts at 100.0K $SQ and increases with each level.

Sale split:

  • 75% goes to the seller
  • 10% goes to the genesis owner
  • 15% goes to protocol

3. Customization

Once you own a square, you can customize it in several ways:

Image & Content

Upload any image to display on your square. You can also add a title and link that appears when users view your square details.

Visual Effects

Upgrade your square with visual tiers to make it stand out on the grid:

Bronze - Subtle glow
Silver - Metallic shine
Gold - Golden aura with glow

Note: Visual effects reset when a square changes ownership.

4. Battle System

Battles are the core mechanic for conquering territory. Attack any owned square to try and take it!

How Battles Work

  1. Select an owned square you want to attack
  2. Choose your stake amount (10-100% of square price)
  3. Both attacker and defender roll dice (1-100)
  4. Add bonuses to each roll
  5. Higher total wins!

Combat Bonuses

Attacker:

  • +50 base attack
  • +Territory bonus (adjacent squares)
  • +Item bonus (if using sword)

Defender:

  • +Square defense stat
  • +15 defender advantage
  • +Territory bonus (adjacent squares)
  • +Item bonus (if using armor)

Battle Outcomes

Attacker Wins:

  • Gains ownership of the square (for free!)
  • Wins the warchest bounty accumulated on that square
  • Gets 70% of stake back (30% distributed as fees)

Attacker Loses:

  • Loses their stake
  • Stake is added to square's warchest bounty (for future attackers)
  • Defender keeps their square

Warchest Bounty

When attackers lose, their stake accumulates in the square's warchest. This makes the square more valuable to attack - the next winner claims the entire bounty!

5. Battle Items

Battle items give you an edge in combat. They are consumable - once used, they are gone.

Battle Sword

+5 attack power on your next attack

Cost: 30,000 $SQ

Battle Armor

+5 defense power on your next defense

Cost: 20,000 $SQ

Limit: You can only hold 1 of each item type at a time. Items automatically activate when you enter battle and are consumed after use.

6. Rewards & Claiming

You earn rewards from winning battles and from being a genesis owner. Check the Battles menu to view and claim your rewards.

Types of Rewards

Battle Wins

Win battles to earn your stake back plus warchest bounty

Genesis Royalties

As genesis owner, earn 5% from every battle on your square

Claiming: Rewards accumulate and can be claimed anytime from the Battles modal. All unclaimed rewards are claimed in a single transaction.

7. Revenue Sharing

Square owners earn passive income from the protocol! 50% of all protocol revenue is distributed to square holders.

Revenue Sources

Protocol earns $SQ tokens from:

  • 15% of every square resale
  • 10% of every battle stake
  • 50% of enhancement purchases

How Distribution Works

Protocol revenue accumulates from sales, battles, and enhancements

2.

50% is distributed to square owners, 50% goes to protocol treasury

3.

Your share is based on your squares' level weight — higher level squares earn more

4.

Distributions run automatically every few minutes

Claiming: Your owner rewards accumulate and can be claimed from the Battles modal alongside battle rewards. Minimum claim amount is 1,000 $SQ.
